Gears of War is a tactical third-person shooter video game developed by Epic Games and published by Microsoft Game Studios. It was initially released as an exclusive title for the Xbox 360 on November 12, 2006 in North America, and on November 17, 2006 in Europe (excluding Germany, where Microsoft Game Studios did not publish the game after it was denied a rating). A Limited Collector's Edition was also released, which included a disc of bonus content and an art book titled Destroyed Beauty that detailed much of the game's back-story. A Microsoft Windows version of the game was created with additional content and released in North America on November 6, 2007, with a Mac OS X version also confirmed.
The game centers on the soldiers of Delta Squad as they fight to save the human inhabitants of the fictional planet Sera from a relentless subterranean enemy known as the Locust Horde. The player assumes the role of Marcus Fenix, a former prisoner and war-hardened soldier. The game is based on the use of cover and strategic fire for the player to advance through the scenarios; a second player can play co-operatively through the main campaign to assist. The game also features several online game modes for up to eight players.
Gears of War has been highly successful since its release; it sold over three million copies in just ten weeks and was the fastest-selling video game of 2006, and was the second-most played game over Xbox Live during 2007.

So yeah, it's a very very good game and i completed it on casual this morning. I haven't fully tried out the online multiplayer yet, but according to a reliable source (Elmand) it's mostly shotgun-running, and Epic games are trying to fix that for GOW2. I'd like to play some Gears with you guys at some point and according to a reliable source (Elmand) my induction ceremony is, "The funniest thing ever". So yeah, a very good game.

It is the sequel to the critically acclaimed best-seller Gears of War, and was announced by lead designer Cliff Bleszinski during the February 20, 2008 Game Developers Conference. The game will use a heavily upgraded version of the Unreal Engine 3. During E3 2008, a worldwide release date for the game was set for November 7, 2008.
In Gears of War 2, the Locust have found a way to make giant emergence holes capable of destroying entire cities at once. Marcus Fenix and the rest of the COG Delta Squad are now drilling underground to "take the fight to the Locust." In a teaser of the first scenes of gameplay of Gears of War 2, COG soldiers engage in battle with a large army of Locust as they travel to drill into the underground region. Comic book writer Joshua Ortega says, "The stakes are raised. This is humanity's last stand. Everything is at risk. Nothing is safe."

So GOW2 is just around the corner and is looking very good. I need to get a pre-order in shortly, as i expect these will sell like hotcakes. I havent read an awful lot about GOW2, but the multiplayer seems to be improved a lot. Which should be fun.

Great game, I've done it on Casual a couple of times and pretty much ploughed through Hardcore without too much hassle...

I'm actually playing it right now on Insane, Chapter 2. I'm at the bridge bit where you have to push the car and I know it's gonna annoy me so I'm having a break from it...

Can't wait for the second, but I do want to finish 1 on Insane first. :3

That level is a prime example of really poor level design.

I was never a big fan of the first game, i was too distracted by the problems; little variation in colour pallete and gameplay, poorly designed bosses and some levels, ambitious story falls flat on its face and has embarrassing dialogue, online is broken without friends. That said, i still think it's a good game, just a 7/10 not a 10/10.

I'm optimistic about the second game though as it looks to repair most of those problems, and every piece of media on the game has impressed me.

That makes up for any flaws you may have seen, surely?

I don't own the first one but I did play through the campaign on co-op and it was great fun. Definitely getting the sequel on release, it looks fantastic. =]

I got the first game with my Xbox, and I love pretty much everything about it, and I haven't even played online yet. I would get the second on release, but there are already 6 or 7 games coming out around that time, so I don't know whether I'll have the funds.

I got it earlier when i was in town. It's pretty awesome actually.

I have Gears, and i like it quite a lot, but tbh i've got too much else to play atm, so i doubt i'll play the original much =/.

Done Insane on all Acts except 1 + 2 (which i'll be doing soon with Shortay ;D), but not played much online.

When my EMA comes through, i'll be ordering Gears 2 collectors edition though <3

Gears of War - Not a fan. Good single player, liked co-op. Multiplayer was bad and there was just something about it I didn't like.

So i've gone into Gears 2 not caring, but slowly i've been gaining interest... not sure what i'm going to do yet.
