 The speedy blue hedgehog came out ahead of fierce rival Mario – the Italian plumber and face of Nintendo - in a poll of UK gamers.

In third place was Lara Croft, the pleasingly-proportioned Tomb Raider star who was brought to life by Angelina Jolie in film adaptations of the game.

Sonic, who was created by Sega in 1991 as a rival to Mario, is famous for his "spin attack" rolls, in which he curls up into a spiky ball to hurl himself at his enemies.

Since his first appearance in an eponymously-titled platform game for the Mega Drive console he has starred in dozens of games, including releases for the Playstation, Game Boy and Xbox.

Titles starring Sonic are now among the biggest sellers on the popular Nintendo Wii console.

His poll triumph over Mario may come as something as a surprise to gamers who see the Nintendo mascot as the more enduring character.

Super Mario Bros was voted the greatest computer game ever in a poll earlier this year, with the original Sonic the Hedgehog game trailing down in fifth.

Donkey Kong, Pac Man and Pikachu, the star of the Pokeman games, are among the popular characters who make today's top 10 list, compiled to mark the start of the London Games Festival this week.

You forgot the fact that the survey was out of 500. You also forgot it was Britain only.

Been it America, Samus Aran would have probably been in it.
If it was Japan, Snake link and Mario would have been in it.

Let's also forget that Britain contains some of the worlds most retarded gamers.

Max is probably because of that film coming out, still odd though.
And Niko isn't exactly that well known.

Good to see Sonic beating Mario for once. I always preferred his 2D outings over Mario's. Shame nowadays he's resorted to numerous shitty games and dA original characters and fanfics.

The Rush series, Chronicles and upcoming Unleashed say hello

Rush series was mediocre at best, I didn't really like it. Would've preferred Tails mode over Blaze too. Just irritating games, and had these un-necessary vehicle parts.
Unleashed isn't out yet but, Werehog; nuff said.

I can't give comment on Sonic Chronicles, but it's an RPG and not a good ol' Sonic game so it doesn't count as much. Apparently that's good though, probably because Sonic Team haven't got their grubbers all over it...

It awesome, just short. So it's great while it lasts.

And Sonic does have good new games. Sonic Adventure 2 Battle was great. Just cause things don't get seen as 9/10s or 8/10s doesn't mean they're bad. Heck I enjoyed Sonic Adventure 2 Battle more than I did MK:DD on my GC. And possibly melee at times.

Me too, I could spend days just in the Chao Garden. I loved that game.

Mainly for

a) How strangely addictive it was
b) Dr.Eggman's voice when he petted a chao
c) Just to get bored and start throwing them at the walls

I think Sega need to make a DS version of just the Chao Garden.
